The Douglas County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the case of a missing Starbuck woman who was last seen in Alexandria.
On Monday at 2:31 p.m., a farmer reported what he believed to be human remains in a field he was harvesting in Orange Township in Douglas County. According to a press release from the sheriff's office, the remains appeared to belong to a female in her late teens or early 20s, but they have not confirmed it is the body of Laura Schwendemann, 18, who went missing on Oct. 14.
Positive identification of the remains are pending autopsy and lab results being conducted by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office. The sheriff's office said they will release more information after test results are completed and that investigation is still ongoing.

Concrete work underway on Railroad Avenue

Starting Oct. 7, crews began work to replace multiple concrete panels along Railroad Avenue in Albany. The panels are between 5th Street and 2nd Street. The removal and replacement of the concrete will take two weeks and will require a lane shift for traffic until the concrete has gained the required strength, according to Jeremy Mathiasen, an associate of Stantec.

“The traveling public should expect the lane shifts to continue through Wednesday, October 21,” Mathiasen said. “Wide vehicles should consider alternate routes during this timeframe.”

Questions about the project may be directed to Jeremy Mathiasen at Stantec (320)529-4366.

ALBANY – As a child, Mary Richter did not go on vacations, trips or getaways. Instead, her family stayed close to home in Hinckley while Mary longed to see the rest of the world.

“I always wanted to travel,” she recalls of her childhood. “But we really never went anywhere. My first opportunity to go on a trip was in 1970 when I went with my 4-H group to Washington D.C. I just loved it!”

When she met her husband Roman in 1986, the couple traveled to Nevada. Ever since, Mary has been making quite a habit of going places and while she built up her list of travels, she made a career out of the passion that was always in her with Pack N Go Travel.

Quarry search concluded; body not located

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of private businesses, drained quarry 8 in the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve. The water levels were lowered to aid in the search for missing St. Cloud man. Phillip Miller, 30 of St. Cloud, went missing Aug. 6., and evidence led searchers to believe his body was in this quarry.

On Aug. 19, 2015, divers from the Stearns/Benton Sheriff’s Dive Team searched the existing water at the bottom of the quarry and did not locate a body. Divers are confident that Mr. Miller is not in this quarry. At this time the search has concluded until/unless other information becomes available to determine the possible location of Mr. Miller’s body.

Jackie Atkinson - Counselor Realty

By Liz Vos

Staff Writer

Jackie Atkinson was seeking a new challenge for herself when she stepped into the real estate business in 2002. Thirteen years later, the work has proven to be the just the challenge she needed; and it came with a great sense of accomplishment.

“My favorite part of this business is getting to know people,” she explained. “It’s fun to meet clients and find out if we are the right fit to work together. Of course, it’s fun to see their lives changing when they find their new home.”

Atkinson, who also owns Ackie’s Pioneer Inn in Freeport with her husband Eddie, has been with Counselor Realty since 2004 and is a shareholder of the company. While she is based out of the Waite Park Counselor Realty office, she has created a meeting space on Albany’s Main Street, where she has been serving her local clients for the past two years.
