Off-duty Avon Police Officer, Jason Falconer, put himself in harms way when he shot and killed Dahir Adan at the Crossroads Center in Waite Park Saturday according to Avon Police Chief Corey Nellis who spoke at a press conference in the Avon City Hall Monday.
Adan allegedly entered the mall near Sears in the southeast corner of the mall stabbing ten people before getting to Macys store on the west end of the mall.
Looking at a bank of news cameras, Nellis said, “We recognize that he saved many lives, but we also have to realize that he’s also a victim,” said Nellis about Falconer’s condition, who wasn’t at the press conference. “He was put in an unfortunate situation – divine intervention – and we can only expect that he needs time to cope.”
Strictly following protocol, Falconer fired at the attacker, who was a graduate of Apollo High School and former student at St. Cloud State University.
“Having to fire live arms in a crowded mall, I’d put my trust in Falconer amongst anyone else,” Nellis said.
Falconer has been with the Avon Police Department since 2007, previously serving as the Police Chief in Albany.
